Early 9K trannies were perhaps more temperamental than the re-engineered and probably more robust '94-'98 units, but there is historical evidence that using gear oil, specifically Redline MTL and similar formulas, could cause catastrophic failure. Been there, done that.
This tranny does not contain hypoid gears and thus hypoid gear oil is neither required nor recommended by Saab. Before '97, Saab recommended 10w30 or 10w40 fossil engine oil, and specifically not synthetic. In '97 a synthetic manual tranny fluid was introduced that Saab claims will extend bearing and gear-flank life, and also recommends it for retrofit into older units. Some have said that Erikkson does not recommend this fluid in the older ('93 and earlier) units, but I replaced the fossil oil in my '95 Aero three years ago, installed as prescribed and changed again about one year ago, and have had excellent results so far. This fluid and fossil engine oil are not compatible, so it is important to follow the factory's specs on changing. I have the TSB if you'd like a copy emailed to you.
If you can afford the $13+/qt. ($10 discounted) price tag, with two quarts required to fill plus another to purge, I'd recommend it in your '94 or any other 9K manual tanny manufactured after '93.
