I just put in a new rebuilt transmission a year or so ago, in the hopes that it would get me to ~200k - since the first one got me to ~130k (don't remember the exact numbers off the top of my head) - but now i'm at 157k, and its going again. This is a real bummer since I really feel confident in the rest of the car, but I can't be dropping 2 grand into the car every year and a half at this point in addition to regular maintenance costs.
So, the symptoms are:
Need to manually shift, especially between 1,2,3. If I try to, for example, start from a stop in D I might be able to make it, but with a bunch of bucking - about what you'd expect trying to start from a stop in 2 (w/o great skill) on a manual. When on the highway, its a little rough when automatically dropping from 4 to 3, but that's not my main complaint. Basically, I can get by ok if I meticulously shift, as if driving a manual.
Should I take this to a transmission shop for some adjustments? (Valve seals, or something?) Is this a losing battle? How long can I expect to keep going like this? If this is the end, should I buy a 1998 aero 9000, or look at the 9-5 wagon?
Thanks.
