Having been in a saab family and ridden with my brother for a number of years I wanted the familys 86 900 then my sister rearended someone on the highway at 60 mph that car went off to the grave yard but she walked away from the crash with not a scratch on her. I then got to drive a plymoth reliant for 2 years until I got the chance to buy my own car. The only thing i looked at was a saab and I've never looked back since. It has certainly grown with me through college and helped me with my field of study (engineering). I do all the work myself and have the car running in top shape. 170 psi compression in all cylinders (piston ring job this summer) and a new tranny last year. Yes the car is fast and powerfull but there have been more times than not that the handeling and power have gotten me out of and accident about to happened because someone "more experienced" has done someting stupid to cause one. Almost always it was someone in an underpowered car trying to do something the car couldn't do.
I don't think you could give hom a better car than the one you are planning to as long as it's the car he wants to get, which is one of the most important things to condider if you want the car to last long at all. He will take much better care of it and be safer in it if he loves the car and enjoys owning it.
---- or my two cents at least
Cheers,
Chuck
