The gears will catch the fluid and froth it into a non-working foam. If it's just a little high, you can open the drain plug and quickly put it back to lower the fluid into the operating range. If it's been a while since any fluid was changed, you'd be well advised to just drain the fluid out the bottom and then put exactly 4.5 quarts back in. I changed fluid every other oil change, changed the filter screen about every 50,000 miles.
