CEL/Ignition Cassette Replacement Posted by Nick [Email] (#227) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nick) on Mon, 3 Nov 2003 06:58:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Shortly after replacing the NGK plugs in my 97 Saab 9000 CSE, in an effort to improve what seemed like erratic firing, the CEL (check engine light) appeared (solid, no blinking), and, after a short period, I took the car into a local independent Saab servicer to have the code diagnosed. The diagnosis was a camshaft position sensor malfunction, and the garage replaced the ignition cassette (430.00 for the cassette, 50.00 labor). This resulted in much improved, though still slightly balkly performance (the turbo was improved but not entirely smooth under steady acceleration). Unfortunately, within two miles of departing the garage, the CEL came on again, as before, and remained solid as I drove back to the garage. After reading the same code as before, the service manager agreed to try replacing the new ignition cassette with a second one, to rule out the small probability that the first replacement cassette was itself faulty, and did so at no charge. While the improved performance remained, the CEL came back on, this time within a mile of the garage. The manager's verdict was that there might well be some more profound problem with the car's wiring, and that - at local labour costs - tracking this down could run into serious dollars. Has anyone had a similar experience and, if so, could you suggest alternative causes for the cause of the CEL phenomenon and possible avenues of diagnosis?
