Check the ignition switch. I had same problem and found a high resistance in the swithch that caused it to get very hot. Yours may be getting hot enought to melt the plastic in the switch housing. Not likely a fuel pump would get hot enough to melt the plastic housing without causing a fire in the fuel tank! You'll need to remove the covers under the steering column to get to the switch, but first try to see if you can localize the melting plastic smell to that area. See my post -- seach for "No Start", if this is the problem you'll be getting a low voltage reading on the iginition coil + terminal. Should be +12-13 volts at the + terminal-- green and white wire on a '89 9000S.
