Hey all,
I've had a 1990 9000 2.0l turbo for the past 5 years. I've had my share of issues, but have still loved the car. My biggest regret has been that I bought an automatic transmission instead of a 5 speed. When it comes time to replace the car (probably within a year) I want to replace it with a 1998 9000 Aero with a 5 speed transmission. However, I live in downtown Boston, on a hill (Beacon Hill) with very tight parking conditions. (When I say very tight, e.g. the other day I came out to my car and the car in front of me was touching my bumper and the car behind me was literally one inch from my bumper. This is not that uncommon.) I often drive in circles in search of a spot and sometimes need to chimmy my way (like a 20 point turn) into small spaces sometimes on a fairly steep incline. For these reasons I tend not to drive the car a whole lot, but when I do take it is because I am getting out of the city and at this point I really love to drive it.
The woman claims that having a standard transmission will be awful, and we need an automatic transmission as long as we live and park on the hill.
My position on the matter is that I don't care (I park the car 95% of the time). I still want the 5 speed Saab. I should probably mention, that at this moment I am a fairly marginal standard transmission driver as I've never done it consistently enough to get really skilled at it - but I'm not terrible either and I know I'll improve rapidly once I'm doing it all the time.
So, who's right? If she is in fact right and I do need to get an auto, then I don't particularly want another Saab. I'd just assume give up on performance driving all together and get a Nissan or something - but I really don't want that. Like I said, I want a 98 9000 Aero 5 speed.
