I have a long and not happy history with the pictogram. On my 91 9kT, it was lit when I got the car and all attempts to remedy that situation led nowhere. So I drove for 60k miles with the wretched thing reminding me that my car was less than perfect.

When I obtained my 98 CSE 18 months ago, I found relief--no more glaring pictogram. Then in November, stupidhead here ran into something in reverse and smashed the right taillight. On went the pictogram--and in that same old "rear lights" mode!

Got a replacement lens from Goldwing (site sponsor--great interaction) and put it on the car. Pictogram wouldn't quit. So I swapped out some bulbs, cleaned and tightened the ground, juggled bulbs, sanded contacts, and cussed...

Today, in a final desperate trial, I took the owner's manual into the local NAPA store, got the bulbs from the rack that I was planning to purchase (full replacement, an often-recommended tactic) and took them to the register. There a very helpful guy responded to my request for reassurance by jumping into his computer. Bulbs from the rack were NOT the spec--those were hiding in the back of the store. It seems that the bulbs on the rack were 27 watt, and the spec is 22 (of something on that order of difference). Newer cars, he said, have cooler bulbs because the plastic in the lens is thinner.

So I bought a full swap of the spec-in-the-back bulbs. Stop and turn looked the same, running light was a different shape.

Plugged them into the mounting boards, fired her up, touched the brake pedal--AND THE PICTOGRAM WENT OUT.

So, folks, there's more to the whole thing than we've generally talked about. Gotta check the wattage against the owner's manual...and the packages on the rack don't list the wattage.

Smiling here, I'll tell you.
