The visible rust was at the left and right bottom corners, say an inch to an inch and a half long horizontally and vertically. The rust manifested as bubbles under the paint. When the glass was pulled,my body man called me to come over and see what we were up against. The rust extended from corner to corner across the bottom edge, with some spots eaten away.To support the bottom edge of the new w/s,he ground away all the wasted material and tacked in new metal. He was so pessimistic about this fix that he didn't charge for this part of the job.As it turned out,he was dead on.
Since you report water leakage,(and an already cracked w/s),I'd recommend you pull the w/s and inspect before swinging parts from the 89 to the 88.
I took some photos of the opening/rust with the w/s out, but they are on my home computer(I think). If I find them,I'll post them in another message.
Good Luck
