I pulled my alternator this weekend and changed the bearings & brushes/regulator. One of the bearings had a wrecked cage, which explains all the noise. Removing and reinstalling the alternator took about an hour not including the time for removing the bearings without the proper tools. Here's the easiest way in my opinion.
1) remove the negative battery cable
2) unbolt and remove the torque arm
3) remove the front half of the fender liner
4) loosen the serpentine belt with a 19mm socket & breaker bar on the
tensioner pulley
5) unbolt the 2 bolts that hold the alternator on with an 8mm allan
wrench, accessing them from the wheelwell.
6) undo the 2 wires
7) with someone strong pulling the engine forward to give some room, pull
the alternator out through the top where the torque arm was.
No messy powersteering pump removal etc required. What would make it even easier would be to loosen off the center bolt on the rear motor mount which would make it easier to pull the engine forward. I don't know about other model years, but this worked great for my '91 9kT SPG, witht the 80A alternator.
