First of all the B234 is an aluminum head on cast iron block.
I have a theory that all gaskets between aluminum and steel fail eventually because aluminum and cast iron expand and contract at different rates. Given enough thermal cycles the fretting causes gasket failure.
Cooling system failures are most often due to a failed tensioner, tensioner pulley or failed idler pulley. I had a tensioner fail at just over 60k miles. Since then I replace all that stuff at about 50k intervals and have had no problems. I also had a thermostat stick closed recently, so thermostats are now on the pre-emptive replacement list.
Most cooling system failures with B234s result in a warped head. With both the tensioner failure and the thermostat I shut mine off instantly and had the car towed home. So far both motors are hanging together pretty well.
Recognize that some of this is statisical. Somewhere I'm sure there is a car with a gazzillion miles on the original head gasket, or a car that's boiled over and the head gasket survived, but for the most part these are the things that qualify as weaknesses.
