I wans't a "car guy" until I bought a beat up '87 9000 several years ago. Repairing cars isn't as difficult as it initially seems (as long as you have the space - do people have garages in Brooklyn?). The Haynes manual describes how to repair most of the parts of the car, and with a decent set of tools (budget $200) and this board as a reference you'll find most simple repairs (ie changing oil, replacing brakes, replacing spark plugs) soon make you comfortable with the more difficult tasks. This familiarity also brings you into the machanic's shop with less ignorance, which reduces that chance you'll be taken (If you know the 9000 doesn't have drum brakes you'll never pay for new drums in a brake job etc).
It would probably be a good idea to drive 2 or 3 different 9000's before buying one. Their condition varies widely, those 86,000 miles may have only been on potholed streets.
