This may not have anything to do with your problem, but what I had on my 86 Volvo 240 was a completely unpredictable symptom of hesitation - any speed at any time randomly: like when you're driving and someone just ligtly yanks the whole car backwards with a rope, or just a very strong wind gust. After a while it cought up with me on the highway. $700 later I was told it was the Hall magnetic pick-up dying in the distributor. If nothing else, your symptom could be the beginning of a dying Hall pickup. You can replace it yourself for cheap, or you can wait and towing and shopcharges later you'll be $700 poorer like I am. IF IT HAPPENS TO YOU, DON'T KEEP CRANKING THE ENGINE TRYING TO START IT, IT WON'T! YOU'LL JUST DILUTE YOUR OIL WITH GASOLINE!
