Thanks for staying with this thread. I made a little progress.
Before, I had pressures of 210 and 10-3. Then I had 170 psi Hi and about 10-2 Low. I added a 12 ounce can of R-134a and pressures went up to 230/50 then dropped back down to about 180 and 20. Ambient temp 78 degrees F tonight (Sunday) and engine running at 1500 rpm. Fans are running. The main thing is cold air is beginning to be felt. Not icy but cold. Compressor a bit louder than it was yesterday; not rumbling though. Does my altitude of 5400 feet affect the calculations?
I think there is a leak. The refrigerant can has a flourescent UV dye in it. I assume you wait til dark and bring out the black light. Look for the glow with the engine running? Sorta fun.
Your remark about retrofitting AC being an art was appropriate because I am in fact an artist. Maybe I need to be more of a scientist for this. But I am also an enthusiast and amateur mechanic with experience with Alfas, Saabs, BMW, Lotus, and Jaguar.
TIA for any continued advice.
