Seiko AC shim removal, a tale of thanks.... (long) Posted by AMG [Email] (#3110) [Profile/Gallery] (more from AMG) on Wed, 23 Jun 2004 08:12:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Though it thankfully hasn't been hot much so far here this summer, the AC in the '93 Aero had been called upon to do it's thing a few times. Woefully, there was a severe coldness cutoff that seemed to occur in heavy traffic or in general after about 20 minutes of driving.
Being less than fully employed and struggling to make it happen financially, I was in a sorry state of mind about this. Not because I really NEED a/c, but because my lady is less than enthusiastic about the mere existence of the Aero, (something about "timedrain" and "that #&^#$ website").
And so I need the basic comforts to work well, or I'll hear the senseless ramblings of misguided volvo and subie lust. (Don't ask me, I'm just telling myself she'll come around eventually.)
Anyway, so I search and read about the shim removal thing and I realize this may be exactly what's wrong because the air is COLD, then nothing. So literally 15 minutes later including research I have removed one of the three shims on the compressor thus reducing the gap from .8mm to .4mm.
Happy to say that the air is cold again for as long as I care to drive, crisis averted, total cost: $0
So, a BIG thank you to Saabnet, Scott, and everyone on the 9K board.
I can't imagine what a repair shop would have charged me to fix this if I went in ignorant. Maybe I would have gotten lucky and paid an hour of labor, maybe unlucky and paid for a new compressor, or worse.
So when membership becomes an option on Saabnet, I know I'll be joining. If you've saved as much as I have here, you'll consider it money well spent.
Thanks again all -AMG
