I have a 1991 9000S with 175,000 miles. When I purchased the car, it was missing the top gear (would only go 35 miles an hour!). I was told that it was the governor seals, which I replaced. They didn't look damaged, but I replaced them anyway while I was in there. No change.
Further research (and the AT service manual) led me to two possibilities: servo piston for C brake band, or a damaged/broken C brake band. Eriksson's sent me the piston ($36.50), which I replaced. The C brake band looked fine--no damage whatsoever. Put it all back together, including a new ATF cooler and rebuilt ATF hoses ($60 total in parts--thanks Ari!!), and fresh fluid and AT filter.
Here's what happens now: at WOT, car will accelerate to about 40-45mph, and go to 6500rpms, but not shift up to the next gear. When at 6500rpms, if I let off the gas, the trans will shift into the upper gear at around 2000rpms, and will drive normally (I only took it up to 60mph). I have been unable to get it to shift into the top gear (4th) in a normal fashion. I only did a few test drives due to the high RPMs involved, and let it cool down in between. I've also adjusted the kickdown cable from one extreme to the other, but no result that I would call "normal operation," although it was close at one point.
According to my AT service manual, here are the possibilities:
1--brake band C damaged or incorrectly adjusted (I've adjusted it twice to spec, and was not damaged when trans was open)
2--governor seals (have been replaced)
3--accumulator, modulator valve
4--upshift valve 3-4
5--shift sequencing valve 2-3-4
6--3rd lockup valve
From the experience of others, what seems to be the most likely explanation for this late shift? Archives seem to suggest the accumulator A spring, but I thought I would present my case before "springing" for parts (sorry, I couldn't resist).
I will also be calling Eriksson's to get some tech support from them, and will post results.
Thanks for any input there may be--you've been so helpful in the past.
