I must say that changing a head gasket is more work than its worth if you're trying to prevent the 2.3 from overheating. There are a lot of other things that can cause on overheat that would, IMHO, make 50K mile HG intervals seem extreme.
If a T-stat tanks in the closed position (Like Craigs), or any coolant leak leads to insufficient cooling, or any number of other things, the engine can overheat.
I think a wiser way to spend your time and money would be on preventive maintenance on the cooling system. Maybe change hoses when they start looking bad...not when the first one goes...and change the T-stat on regular intervals. And, the coolant should not stay in the car for more that 18-24 months or 45-60K.
I acquired a low mileage '93 Aero a while back. (45K when I bought it last year.) I think the owner had only changed the coolant once, going by mileage and not by time...the cooland had gone bad and ruined the HG, so I was stuck with a little bit of water in Cyl 1 one day (It didn't idle very well, so I checked things out.) After a couple hundred bucks and some dirty fingernails and raw knuckles, it was back in service. Trust me, I will make sure the coolant in my car is clean and changed frequently now (I pro'ly would have anyway, but now I'm more mindful of it.)
An overheated engine is a bad thing...and a nice new shiny HG will be one less thing to worry about in the on-going battle to prevent one...but an alert driver can usually turn the car off before serious damage has been done.
Regards,
Peter
