I was having trouble getting the low speed to engage, so I wired it to the high speed first. I didn't know this was a problem so I left it....until the high speed fuse melted into the fuse box and I can't clear the contacts....I then really went into it to figure out what was wrong...apparently my low speed wire is not completing the circuit somewhere between where it comes out of the wiring bundle under the radiator and where it goes into to the fuse box (I elminated the plug down there and made a direct connection with some butt-connectors wrapped in heat shrink tubing). So I jumped the high speed trigger to the low speed trigger in the fuse box and have been just using it as a low (single) speed fan. But now that I'm getting voltage drop, I'm thinking about getting a single speed aftermarket fan, thinking I can pick something up that will consume less amperage than the factory and move more air.
Of course this may or may not be related to general voltage problem that I've been having latley....were my voltage hangs out around 13.3-13.5 volts. The car has a 18 month old alternator and a 3 year old dry cell battery. The alternator is a rebuilt boshce unit which gave me problems and almost left me stranded about 8 months ago, when I pulled into a random saab dealer with my voltage dropping into single digits. I pulled out my suspect VR which turned out to be totally shot and swapped for a new one I bought (the were gracious enough to let me use their parking lot as my shop)...everything ran well (solid 13.9-14.1) for at least another 10 months, until now when voltage is dodgy. I pulled the VR again and it's still twice the recommended replacement length. I'm going to get the battery checked and inspect and clean the main power and voltage wires/contacts this weekend.
Right now power occassionally will drop under 13 volts when the fan kicks on, and it always drops a good .3 volts when I turn on the lights...if that means anything to you.
Thanks for your help and reading my "book" your input is invaluable.
Regards,
Chad
