of engineering. Yet one more indication of Saab's formidable engineering skills.
The trionic system actually uses the spark plug electrode to measure combustion by products, moments after the spark plug fires. Presumably the residual ionization left by the combustion process can be used to tell if the motor is running lean or rich.
The engineering difficulties of doing this are formidable; How to make a sensitive measurement on an electrode that also generates a 50,000 volt arc. If that's not tough enough the injector pulse width and the ignition timing need to be recalculated based on engine temperature, boost level and such indivdually for each cylinder every rotation of the motor. This really was cutting edge technology at the time.
Thus the spark plug is not just an ignition device, but a sensor as well. Dial up http://www.eeuroparts.com, buy the plugs they stock and change them often.
Good luck
