I completed the BS project on my Saab 9000 CS Auto 1992, 128,000 Kms this weekend, repalced BS sprocket, BS chain and timing chain, most followed the proceed on Quasimotors.com.
At such a low mileage, the soft BS sprocket has been about 50% worn, and the teeth were thin to half!
The project is not too hard for DIY if you have good mechanical sense (and timing belt change experience on other cars).
1. To reomve the timing cover, it is necessary to remove all the attached brackets (AC, water pump, alternator, PS pump) and the two idle tensioner supporters on the face of timing cover, there is a timing cover bolt under the lower idle supporter.
2. I removed the oil pump cover from timing cover, but it sounds unnecessary.
3. To hammer the timing cover off the engine without damage the head gasket, I loosed almost all the bolts under the oil pan for about 2 to 3 mm and inserted a screwdriver between the engine body and the oil pan to generate a small space for timing cover movement. Don't forget to spread some sealant when you refit the oil pan. Also I removed the upper engine mount to get more woring space.
4. All the guides are OK so I keep them. The main reason is that the parts are too experience in Australia. Here is the list (1 AU$ = 0.7 US$)
BS sprocket 107 AU$ (fair price)
BS chain 260 AU$
Timing chain 160 AU$
Upper timing guide 60 AU$ !!!! (just a piece of rubber)
Good luck if you carry out such a job in the future.
