OK, last night I went for a nice ... brisk... run up the local mountain before the start of the fall semester and me having no time for such wondrous pleasures and regretfully turn my stock '86 9000T into a commuter car. I stop at the bottom and clear my head before going up. All of a sudden four REALLY really loud japanese cars go flying past. I say to myself, what the hell. I jump in my baby, and tear off after them catching them in about a minute, which I didn't think was too bad.
The one in back was an Eclipse. Heavily modified with a blow-off valve you could hear a mile away and an exhaust the size of a sewer pipe. Caught him no problem. He pulled over and let me in front of him, trying to keep up for quite a while, while failing miserably. The next two were a couple of Supras; a twin turbo and single. The twin was in front and kept pulling away from the other and myself, and eventually the single let me past and I caught the twin on the corners, still him pulling away in the straights. He realized it wasn't his buddy behind him and pulled over and let me go. The fourth guy had slowed down to let his friends catch up, his NSX carving up corners like crazy. I caught him still going slowly and when he takes off, me, admittedly struggling, to keep up. I am surprised though, that am able to keep up, once again in the turns. We go for about 15 miles on this beautifully windy road before he pulls off. First he was excited that someone was keeping up, then he was pissed when he found out it was a stock 18 year old SAAB instead of one of his japanese car siblings. Running on crapy firestone indy 500's (and a cooper... another long story) no less. His anger turned to admiration for the flying swede as we talked for about ten minutes before his friends came screeching around the corner. After they stopped and the NSX driver filled them in on our little run, the supras promptly over heated ( me laughing to myself), putting an end to the fun.
Moral of the story?
NEVER underestimate a SAAB.
Thought I'd share! Take care all!
