...I replaced it, the pulleys and tensioner about 15K miles ago with all-new stuff. Just went last night without a warning (shredded to half its width but didn't go entirely). No shrieks, as would seem to be what would happen if one of the pulleys wasn't turning or if the crank pulley was separating. Just heard the noise of the frayed sections of the belt flapping around against the fender liner, etc.
I noticed, while sitting on the side of the road with my flashers on for about 45 minutes, that the battery drained down to where the flashers stopped working. I wasn't using the interior lights or any other accessories.
Car is a '93 Aero with 144K miles, 5 speed. I've just about gone through everything on this car in the last year, including ALL timing elements, gaskets, seals, on and on. Did the work myself.
Spoke with my brother Dave, who frequents this site. Here are the three thoughts we had, but I'd like help and input from the rest of you:
1. The belt simply wasn't a good one. Bought from eEuro, and I've not had a problem with most of what I get from them.
2. Given the rapid discharging of the battery from ONLY the flashers, perhaps the alternator is going, and in particular, perhaps its bearing is shot, which would have caused it to stop turning? My Indie will be able to confirm whether the alternator spins freely or not. This is the original alternator, 11 years old, 144K miles old. I figured I'd eventually have to replace anyway. If I DO have to replace this item, should I also replace the voltage regulator?
3. Crank pulley going bad? It's the only other element I didn't change -- and probably should have -- when I did all the other work. So it's also 11 years old, 144K miles old (AC compressor and water pump were both replaced about 60K miles ago.)
Any suggestions? I'm going to have my Indie check all related serp. belt components to make sure everything's aligned correctly, nothing's seized, etc.
Many thanks for any and all help! (Please don't hesitate to give me a ring on my cell number below if you have any amazing brainstorms -- I'll be offline most of the rest of today.)
