Ran some experiments and it looks like I need a new CPS.
I proved to myself that the car always starts when stone cold and idles and drives fine. About the time the thermistat opens it skips a few beats, quits and won't restart. At this point the CPS is just warm to the touch. When I pour water (or throw snow) on it the car starts again as if I had thrown a switch.
I didn't have time to pull the CPS out yet, but there's one thing I'm a bit concerned about. With the inner fender out I can hear quite a rattle behind the crank pulley while it's running. The car has 212k on it but I did the chains 100k ago so I don't think it's sprocket noise. Is there anything back there that could come loose? Could the back of my crank pulley be caked up with rust? The rubber in the crank pulley must be shot because the drive pulley isn't running true. It makes the tensioner bounce. Could the crank pulley be beating up the CPS?
