Really Sloppy Shifting

My beloved 96CS is shifting in such a sloppy manner i'm afraid one of these days i will not be able to find any of the gears. There is a lot of slop in all gears, almost like i'm in neutral all the time.
Then there is the popping sound coming from the right underside whenever i am stopping the car and the same thing when i take off again. It is embarassing when i have passengers with me, because they too can hear the noise.
I do not know whether the too problems are tied together, but any advice to fix these problems is appreciated.
