You can have lots of fun with the Search box!

1993 was the first model year with Saab's clever "Trionic" engine management system, that effectively uses the spark plugs as sensors. Rule one - always use the recommended NGK BCPR7-ES plugs - others may cause problems.

1994 model year cars had a slightly different version, Trionic T5, and you can't put a 94-on ECU into a 93 car. But the 93 version works fine (I have a 93 car) - should the need/requirement arise you just have to find tuners who will work on it, such as Maptun in Sweden. Very nice people who speak good English. However, if and when the car dies you'll have fewer people to sell the modified ECU to.

'94-on engines were also different in lots of little ways, making some parts incompatible, particularly the block. However, the auto transmission is the same (though not the manual one, I believe), the exhaust is the same, most things are fine - just check first before buying stuff, particularly second-hand.

There is also the question of the traction control system (TCS) which people get extremely worked up about - with a '93 automatic I don't think you have that anyway but someone (including you) may know different.

As to your car having 176,000 miles on it: well, there are several people here with much higher mileages, and they love them to bits. I don't know how long you've had your Saab, or what Saab facilities you have in Puerto Rico. You own a luxury European car twelve years down the line. If the car has no service history, all bets are off, really - it could be on its first auto transmission, or its third.

I would not personally invest anything in a car that age except for proper everyday maintenance, but it's your call and you've made the best possible first step by looking at this board. Respectfully suggest you get all the basics right before considering any tuning!
