Drives side mirror fell off

The heated drivers side mirror glass just dropped of yeasterday when the car was parked. I've understood that this is very common for 9K. I have a 93 CSE.
The mirror is more or less unbroken and I'll try to put it back. I'm not completely clear over how the heating works, however, and I would like to keep it working if possible. My question is whether I should remove anything (old glue or whatever it may be?) from the heating pad or just put the mirrorglass back right on top of what is left with the help of 3M double-sided tape or silicone glue (as adviced here before)? Additional question: how do I detach the heating cables (if that's necessary) when removing the gimble mount (or whatever it is called) by turning the white ring with a screwdriver?
