I would have to question whether the Subaru is truly on it's last legs. Admittedly early 90's cars do tend to look like they are on their last legs, but unless it has 300K the odds are it will keep going for a long long time. They are rusters in a big way but it tends to be cosmetic and non-structural--the undersides seem to last. I think something compact and familiar might be the best route. It might be well worth seeing what the Subaru needs to soldier on--you might be surprised how little it costs to bring it up to snuff. I doubt they would truly appreciate the attributes of the Saab, and therefore would surely would not appreciate the cost of owning and maintaining one.
