Hi Pat,
I can understand your frustration. It can be hard to get someone to replace a $15 part that only takes one hour. However, if the boot is really opened up, it is probably wise to thoroughly clean and re-grease the CV joint, which is also time consuming and messy.
You might consider replacing the entire axle yourself. A rebuilt axle apparently costs less than $100 from a site sponsors, and can be replaced in about half on our. It’s actually much easier than replacing just the outer CV boot, which is indeed quite messy and a bit tricky. I live in Durham and could loan you the tools to do the job, or even help if you want to drive out here.
However, you might want to keep shopping and find a shop that is willing to do just the boot for less. They don’t need to know anything about Saabs in particular, as the axle system is pretty typical. Just make sure they torque the axle nut correctly. The CV joint should last a long time assuming it doesn’t get contaminated.
Take care,
Craig
