The fuel filter is bolted to the back of the battery box, right by the firewall on the driver's side (Left hand drive cars).
It might be the fuel filter, but I'd also suspect the AMM (air mass meter). The engine control schedules fuel mostly on the AMM signal. Pop the throttle wide open, and the AMM needs to sense the additional airflow and add fuel quickly. In fact, it's going to go into an enrichment mode. My guess is that the system isn't sensing the additional airflow well, and you're leaning the engine out too much. The engine control can work around a bad AMM by looking at other variables, like engine speed - if you crack the throttle open slowly, the engine will speed up a little, and the engine control has time to add a little fuel, so the engine can speed up a little more, etc.
The other might be the throttle position switch. Always good to check.
