..but I could be wrong. I think the best place to start is with a good college text on engineering materials. It's been a while since I've taken a course, but I still have a soft-cover copy of "Engineering Materials: An Introduction to their Properties and Applications" by M. Ashby and D. Jones (Pergamon Int'l Library). It gives a very good basic foundation for not only metals, but other engineering materials. It's not very difficult to read and there's only elementary mathematics (algebra, no calculus). Essentially, it covers topics like elastic moduli, yield/tensile strength, hardness, ductility, fast fracture, creep, etc. These are all basics that one has to develop before going on to metallurgy, which really isn't my specialty. And like I said, it's been a while since I've studied this stuff, so there may be newer, more lay-man friendly stuff out there.
