Well I posted on my upgrade from a stock aero and adding a Down pipe, here is the latest installment on the ECU upgrade.
My car is a 1995 9000 Aero 5spd w/TCS. Now has 132,000 miles on it.
On my car I have added a K&N air filter, a JT 3" downpipe and it presently has no cat and the stock tailpipe and mufflers. This will be changed to a full 3" in a couple of months.
I shopped for an ECU and I kept coming back to SQR as one of a couple very good choices either that or Nordic. I went with SQR as I was told that Nordic wouldn't touch a TCS car.
So I had Jak from Jak Stoll performance take an ECU up to Frank a couple of weeks ago to flash a stage 3 for my car. Here are my first day observations:
Installation: A cakewalk. unplug the battery, lift up the plastic cover, undo one screw for the ground and it's plug and play from there.
Car started right up and no codes were flashing, I took it for an easy cruise until it was fully warmed. I noticed no difference in light throttle performance or driveability. All is well.
I found a remote place and got on the gas a bit. I noticed the boost went right to the end of the red instantly-it kind of scared me, like maybe I was going to break something so I backed off. I new I had to do some adaptation runs from 2000-4000rpm at WOT in 3rd, 4th,& 5th. So I did and by the time I was done it would have taken plastic surgery to remove the grin on my face. Those runs really wake up something in the car.
I drove about 100 miles today in mixed driving and the car keeps performing better and better. The boost goes completely off the end of the red and into the black a good 1/8 inch or so. The torque comes on early as it does before only stronger. Whereas it used to peak about 2500-3000 rpm, the torque now peaks about 3500rpms. To translate this it seems like this: Since I'm used to the boost tapering after 3000 a bit, it now feels like I'm just getting shot from a giant sling shot at about 3500. The boost comes on just as early and much stronger but builds like crazy until you are going too fast to be safe on public roads, so I chicken out and whisper to myself-Holy Crap!!
The power is very smooth and has more than I'll need at any one acceleration. Highway passing has always been phenominal in an Aero, now it's blistering. IF you downshift to 4th and hit it, you'll pass nearly instantaneously.
I'm not a street racer and I don't have a death wish. I love having a stealthy looking car that's 10 years old that will run down nearly anything on the road. While I won't use all that power very often, I am looking forward to the next time an M3 or an S4 or an R are next to me on an onramp.
For me it was definately worth the money. The 9000 Aero 10 years ago stood apart from nearly every other car in terms of performance, now with the SQR stage 3 the spirit of the Aero has been ressurected even in today's competitive market. I will take people on rides for a doller.
