Wierd ABS/ brake problem

Just twice when I have started my 9000 from cold the ABS light has come on and stayed on. It's not like older cars with a leaky high pressure cylinder - it doesn't go off after about 15 seconds.
On each occasion, I could turn off the ignition, start the car again and everything was as normal - the light flickered and went off after a couple of seconds.
The last time this happened, there seemed to be another connected problem. The first time I touched the brakes, they came on very hard, even though I had only braked gently.
This happened again later in the day. I started that car, the ABS light went off as usual and about 100 yards up the road I touched the brakes lightly. The car slowed gently for about a second, then came to a dead stop as if I had stood on the brakes.
I don't know if there could be any connection, but on the last couple of trips the car has had a harsh ride. It feels as if it needs new dampers at the front, even though it had them all round not long ago.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
