It's normal for the ABS light to come on for a few seconds when you first start the car, but it should wink out as the ABS pressure comes up and the ABS self-test finishes.
If you start the car and just sit there - don't drive off - and the light stays on, then the ABS system has detected a fault at start-up. The test it runs is to compare the resistance of all the sensors. If one sensor resistance is out of whack with the others, it lights the ABS light, and the light will stay on as long as the car is on.
The brakes will feel fine, because all that has happened is a sensor fault, which affects only ABS, not normal braking.
You may have disturbed an ABS sensor cable, most likely from the left front wheel. It could have been getting old (it is over 12 years old) and been damaged by a little extra force. Or the connector just might be a little loose. The four ABS connectors meet the harness at the ABS box, under the panel at the base of the windshield on the drivers (US cars) side. The ABS connectors are two-pin, and look like fat, stubby black pencils. Reseat the connectors. If that doesn't do the trick, take an ohmmeter and measure the sensor side. It should be around 1200 ohms or so. If one sensor is way out, you'll need to replace that sensor. If everything looks good, reseat the 'harmonica' connector on the ABS box.
