remove the valve cover. see the timing chain on the sprockets. grab it and pull up. if it comes out, you have a big problem (probably bent valves). If it is solid, crank the engine with the valve cover removed and watch to make sure that both cams spin (if not, you still probably have bent valves).
A common problem was the balance chain sprocket would wear down and let the chain ride off of the teeth. It happened to me, fortunately was covered by warranty.
