Oil Pump O Ring Too Big!!!!

I am replacing the dreaded crank oil seal and oil pump O ring on my 93 9k cse with A/T. I read the threads and so far good until I start to reassemble. The new O ring when fitted in the channel is about 1/2" to 1" too large. I ordered the parts from Eeuroparts. What next.
I have the old one but it is hard and rigid with a tiny crack in one place but still in one piece. I would think if I cut it, chances are it will leak. Today is Saturday and everything is closed. Anybody have any suggestions. If I end up having to wait a few days will leaving the pieces apart be bad or should I assemble without the gasket to keep exposure down.
Any Help is appreciated!!!
