Clunky/loose shifting

I have a 95 aero 5spd and when shifting my car the shifter feels sort of loose and its very clunky and noisy. The shifter just doesnt seem very precise and its sort of loose and seems like it has a strage or incorrect shifting pattern. With the stick in neutral I can move it up and down a little bit very easily and it makes a plastic clunking sound. What can I inspect in my shifter and/or shift linkage? What seems to go wrong with the shifting on these cars? Anything I can visually inspect?
