Yesterday, when I went turn off the car, I turned the key off and removed it, I began to notice something strange: The car was still on and the engine was still running. The only way to turn the car off was to intentionally stall the car and use the key to start it again. The same thing happened when I reomved the key the second time (the car reacted as if the key was still in the ignition and turned to the on position. Well, after a few more of these routines and without touching a thing, the ignition problem disappeared. But in its place the exterior lights wouldn't turn off. Either the car would use up all its gas or its battery power. I could take my pick.
I then drove the car home with plans to disconnect the battery, so I could start it today. As I popped the hood, the lights-always-on problem disappeared. "Is this car self-healing?" I ask.
Driving the car today was fine until just an hour ago. I went to turn the car on and all the electrical power was gone. I thought the battery died. As I opened the door to look under the hood, all of the lights came back on and I am able to start the car. The clock needed to be reset and the stereo needed the code. The electrical gauge read 10.4 V but quickly returned to the 13.0V normal operating range while driving.
What's going on here? My educated, informed and professional guess is a "loose wire". Am I correct? Is this something I can fix? Or do I need to pay a mechanic $85 to tighten one screw? Is it something worse? The
alternator? The starter? The battery itself looks new and was cleared by the Saab guys two weeks ago. There is no white residue or anything at the connections.
Any advice you have would be helpful.
