And it is the one that blocks the flow through the coolant when the engine gets really hot. This is done in order to divert maximum possible flow to the radiator. Of course, with a low degree thermostat or a non-spec thermostat, it will tend to block the heater core flow early. If a thermostat is stuck fully open, it may continuously block the heater system.
Winter time, it can be completely removed from the end of the thermostat, of course by necessary tools and force..
The typical symptom is heater blower blowing cold air after the engine temp goes past 9 o'clock. Stop the car and let cool for 10 minutes, you will have your heat back. If this is happening to you, then I would bet money on early blockage of the heater core coolant flow.
