A failing voltage regulator would only lead to a drained battery, which could cause the engine, radio, etc to stop working. But in my experience the engine will run rough and simultaneously the radio will start to cut out, especially if you tap the brakes (the lights take lots of power). But you said your car starts right back up- then there is no way the problem is caused by a bad battery or voltage regulator. The reason I said the problem might be the computer is because the tachometer, etc is turned on by the computer, but the radio is not. The radio is more or less wired to the ignition switch, which goes to the battery. Perhaps a ground for the computer is loose, or there is a short occuring somewhere that is messing up the computer and engine.
