engine mount follow-up..... Posted by vtsnaab [Email] (#26) [Profile/Gallery] (more from vtsnaab) on Thu, 5 Jan 2006 16:49:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A while back there were some postings on this particular subject
that were pretty amazing - and here is what happened as a result
of that great info....
TSN folks are just the BEST !!!
I followed Marvin Stockman's directions and got the highest quality
silicone rubber that they had at home despot - something like black
GE silicone II with a lifetime warranty.
Made sure the engine was well warmed beforehand so cold parts would
not slow the curing of the rubber...a drive to town and back seemed
like enough !
Cleaned the busted mounts very deeply with brake parts cleaner spray,
and allowed it time to evaporate as I wedged the mount back to center
with wooden wedges.
Opened the tube to a small opening only, and pushed it in as far as
I could get it, then filled every little crevice as much as possible
from every angle I could manage.
Smoothed the surface with a gloved finger the best I could.
Left it inside the neighbor's garage overnight to cure after shutting
the hood to contain what heat was left.
It cured fine and solidly by the next day, and the difference was
immediately obvious when I drove it.
Now it has been about 2 months since the repair and not only is there
no feeling of the sloppiness there was pre-repair, but the material I
stuffed in there is still as solid and as good as the day it cured in
there.
This is a fantastic result for $3.99 worth of material and less than
30 minutes of effort !
I highly recommend this procedure to anyone with busted up top engine
mounts.
In my memory this brings me back to my very first 9KT, a decade ago -
not knowing anywheres near enough to be careful and believing the
arcane explanations given by the garage I thought I could trust - then
paying $500+ for a mount job, thinking it was a big job and all...
Now I know what an ignorant fool I was !!
As a side note - I don't think I will ever use standard mounts
because now that I understand the situation better, it will either
be a silicone fill-in repeat, or the poly mounts that require no
tool to install.
Best Wishes, and Appreciation to All You Fine, Helpful Folks !
