I have a 91 9kt and decided to have the transmission rebuilt locally at 130k. I don't regret the investment; however, I am not fully confident in the work as the tech was inexperienced with Saab trannys and it has some disturbing clunks during operation. Anyway, I wish that I had spent the $1,800 necessary for an Erikson-rebuilt transmission. (Hindsight is always 20/20.)
Finding a good used unit is not a likely option, since you would need a transmission from a 1991 or 1992 turbo model to retain the same final drive ratio. Because they are relatively short lived units, most will have some type of problem that won't be obvious until it is installed.
The bottom line hinges on your ability to find a recently rebuilt unit or if you want to invest the $1,800 for an Erikson-rebuilt unit. If the investment is too much for you, get an Aero before they are all gone. If you decide to sell or part your car, let me know, too!
Good luck,
Dan
