long philosophical ramble on stuck nuts Posted by KenManiac [Email] (#392) [Profile/Gallery] (more from KenManiac) on Wed, 1 Mar 2006 11:38:40 In Reply to: Torx screws for DI stripped, Robbo, Tue, 28 Feb 2006 14:24:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
pu the tool in the bolt head and whap it with a hammer a few times. whap it inline with the bolt (hit it straight-on). i do this to pretty much every fastener i attempt to remove. if i forget, i get reminded pretty quick when the bolt snaps or the head strips.
get yourself a set of left-handed drill bits. last resort, but a good one that more often than not gets i turning the proper way.
heat is good for nuts. you can try heating the head of the bolt until it's good and hot, hit it a couple times with a good hammer (with the tool in it) take the tool out and let it cool. then try.
if you don't mind the squirrel-chewed look, you can use a nice sharp chisel to turn the bolt. dig a divot, then hit it almost tangentially in the desired direction. practice on a junk part to get the feel. you don't want to learn to do this on a critical part.
impact is nearly always helpful. impact gun, impact driver, or just the socket and a hammer. use the special ninja technique to bust it loose. don't ease it loose, give it a good pop.
