I bought a 94 Aero auto in August of last year, and have always been frankly a bit disappointed with its performance. It's fast, but it didn't FEEL fast. From what I remember, my 82 Volvo turbo (intercooled, retard mod guinea pig, running roughly double stock boost) was a lot quicker. Maybe it was just the lack of drama in the Saab, I thought.
Replaced BPC, many various parts, noticed some inprovements. Still not all that great, and I was only getting at best 19 MPG. Had a CEL for temp sensor, got both new. No real change. Found a 3 wire O2 sensor in my box of tricks, but haven't put it in yet.
A few days ago, after reading way too many posts about governor seals and accumulator springs, I read what sounded like one of my symptoms, taking a full second to downshift from 4 to 3. If I didn't ease it, the engine would rev and when it finally hit 3rd, it would really hit it.
The suggested solution? adj the C-band. So I went out and did it. The intercooler-to-throttle body pipe was rubbing against the band adjustment screw, explaining one of the noises I've been hearing.
Well, the adjustment was so frozen to the locknut it took a long time to get it loose, after PB Blaster and running it in and out a few times to ease it up. I torqued it to 7 1/2 Ft/Lbs and ran the locknut down.
Well, when I drove it, it was like a new car, literally! The 4-3 downshift was almost without pause, much smoother. It pulls really hard in every gear, much more boot-in-the-back than it ever had before. One of the things that made me really happy today was driving on a rural hiway, not limited access, for a few miles. (after filling the tank and resetting the EDU) I saw 27.7 MPG!! This is a dramatic improvement from the usual 17-18. I can't wait to get on the thruway and drive for an hour or so and see what I get.
Apologies for so many words, but I am very very happy about this.
I heartily recommend that anyone with an automatic try a band adjustment, especially if your performance or mileage seem to be less than desired. It is not probably listed as a maintenance item every 60k or so, it should be.
