Comments are based on using and selling AMSOIL for over 27 years now, and using it in Saabs for that long.
First recommendation is to use a good engine flush. For a quick flush, the best I know of are sold by AMSOIL and BG. For a flush that takes a while, check out Auto-Rx.
If you don't, or won't, flush, then watch the oil level. If oil consumption suddenly increases after a couple thousand miles, change the filter and top off. It might not be a bad idea to change filter after a couple thousand miles, anyhow.
A semi-synthetic, partial synthetic, or synthetic blend is, in my opinion, a profit-increasing product which may or may not be of much benefit. There is no standard for how much synthetic base is in there--could be as little as an ounce.
Even in the known sludge monster Saab (and other) engines, a good synthetic can go at least as long as the factory recommended drain interval. Many non-synthetics cannot safely run that long.
