It's been my observation, though you'd never no it by my actions, that one is better off in the long run with any non-normal car to buy the best one they can afford from the get go. This sometimes means selling one and buying another. Trick is finding one that is proven in better shape.
This is why us euro car guys are so dang big on actual printed service records. That $1500 beauty becomes a rea beast when it needs $2500 in parts and a lot of blood and sweat in the first year to make it a decent car. Whole lot more driving enjoyment in just plunking down $4K or whatever and being road-ready. And as my somewhat aged father is fond of saying, it get's old haveing to FIX everything before you can start doing fun modifications to a car. I thought he was just getting old for a long time, but I'm starting to agree.
Like I said though, you'd never know I believe this from the cars I buy..
