i need some diagnostic help. i'm going to renew the head gasket on a 93 non turbo cs that's been leaking coolant into cylinder number 1. one thing i've noticed is that, on start up, the engine rattles like a diesel. i'm not sure whether it is piston slap, a rod knock, or something innocuous like bad hydraulic valve lifters. if i were calling in to "Car Talk" i'd say it sounds like a deep thock, thock sound, not the click, click i would expect from bad lifters. in any case, once the engine has warmed up, the engine rattle disappears.
i'm just wondering whether a head gasket job is going to be a waste of time and that a replacement engine is in order (it's got 190,000 miles on it). any thoughts would truly be appreciated.
