The ignition switch typically only fails at the initial startup, when the interior of the car is hot, not while the car is already running. The same can be said for the starter solenoid, which produces the same symptoms under the same conditions, the only difference being you hear a click if the solenoid is bad, if it's the swtich, you get nothing.
As to your problem, I would say that the ignition amplifier module (next to battery on top of fender well), or the hall effect pickup inside the distributor. Both can cause the same symptoms, ie engine suddenly dies and tach drops to zero, and tach needle does not bounce while trying to restart (this is the key to an ignition problem compared to fuel problem). I had both fail on my former '87, and both were affected by heat. The longer the engine ran, the more likely they were to fail, and the longer would be the interval before I could restart (engine would need to cool down fully). Ignition module is easy to replace and pretty cheap, $40 or so. The hall effect pickup can be replaced with a distributor rebuild kit, but a much quicker option, and not much more expensive, is to get a known good distributor and swap that in. You could also get a new distributor, but that's pricey...
Anyhow, key is the tach needle bouncing. If it doesn't bounce while cranking, you have no signal from the ignition to the ECU, and the car will never start.
