The first thing I'd look into is if the linkage is moving correctly, and is adjusted right. Neutral sounds like the tranny is still in Park. In Reverse, will the car move? I'd recommend trying it on a hill, versus putting the car and gear and then getting out and pushing. If Reverse doesn't move either, that could also point to a linkage screwup.
Here is a question - When you apply gas in Reverse, does the engine seem to bog a little, just like if you had your foot on the brake? If the tranny is in neutral, the engine should race when applying the gas; in gear, it'll bog a bit.
The other thought I have is that there is a pawl in the transmission that holds the tranny locked in Park. That's what keeps the car from rolling in Park. If that is engaging at the wrong time, that could cause the same issues.
I'd check fluid level and shifter adjustment.
