I have certainly witnessed lower fuel economy with a bad O2 sensor, but it wasn't ever more than 3-4 MPG, or less than half of your drop. The car did still run fine, as yours. However, perhaps the newer cars depend more on the O2 sensor for fuel economy than do the older cars. Or perhaps, the Trionic system automatically goes to a different fuel map when there is a CEL?
