If the car's not running, how do you know what gear you are in? It might feel like first or second were engaged, but it turns out to be 3rd/4th. I zip-tied my (old style, See Gene's Post) coupler to make the drive from Montana to California, including a drive over the Beartooth highway (A shift-intensive must-see if you're in the area).
It feels like you're engaging 1st/2nd, but it turns out to be 3/4.
The zip-ties are a quick fix, but I felt better (and the shifting action did too) once I replaced it.
Best of luck, Jason.
